Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System and ASR XL Acetabular System were recalled in August 2010 after it was discovered that the devices had the potential to cause a number of harmful side effects including bone fractures, loose and dislocated hip cups, muscle and tissue damage, tumors from metal debris, and metallosis. Metallosis, caused by the metal parts of the implant rubbing together, can result in dangerous levels of chromium and cobalt being release into the body. Similar complaints have been filed concerning the DePuy Pinnacle Hip System. So far, no recall of the Pinnacle Hip System has been issued.
